History 

Hyder Ali  (3 Marks)

• Hyder Ali was the Sultan and de facto ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore.

• Hyder Ali was a military leader during the First and Second Anglo–Mysore Wars when he fought the East India Company regularly. 

• Tipu Sultan was Haidar Ali's son

Tipu Sultan  (3 Marks)

• Born in November 1750, Tipu Sultan was Haidar Ali’s son and a great warrior

• Also known as the Tiger of Mysore.

• He was a well educated man fluent in Arabic, Persian, and Urdu.

• Became ruler of Mysore in 1782 

• Fought 3rd Anglo Mysore War which was concluded with Treaty of Seringapatnam

• Died in 1799 during Fourth Anglo Mysore War

Battle of Porto Novo  (3 Marks)

• The Battle of Porto Novo was fought between Hyder Ali of Mysore and the British East India Company on 1 July 1781. The English were victorious and this battle put a check on the expansion of Hyder Ali.

• The Battle of Porto Novo was fought on 1 July 1781 between forces of the Kingdom of Mysore and Great Britain in the place called Porto Novo (now known as Parangipettai) during the Second Anglo-Mysore War. 

• Eyre Coote defeated Hyder Ali in the battle of Porto Novo.
